Holiday Hustle and Bustle: Keeping Your Mind in Check This Season!

A study by the National Alliance on Mental Illness revealed that 64% of people dealing with mental health issues felt their situation got worse during the holiday season. It seems holiday stress is hitting everyone hard. The American Psychiatric Association reports that 40% of healthcare workers and 37% of office/admin staff are feeling anxious about the long hours they have to put in during this time. Almost half of retail and service workers say their stress levels spike during what’s supposed to be the happiest time of the year.

The Christmas season is such a joy! I really enjoy reconnecting with friends over some hot cocoa and hitting up holiday parties with fellow New Yorkers. Still, I can’t ignore the heavy load of stress that feels like a lead blanket: clinical duties, project deadlines, family health issues, travel plans, and a bunch of other things on my plate. I try to stay organized, share the load, put some things on hold, and most importantly, take a moment to slow down, breathe, eat well, get enough sleep, laugh, appreciate what I have, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. There’s no shame in that! Wishing you a safe, healthy, and joyful holiday season!
